Niomon (#23)

History

Founded by Gyōki. In 815, at the age of 42, Kūkai visited this temple, prayed that misfortune would not come upon himself and others, and carved a statue of Yakushi Nyorai. There are 42 steps for men and 33 for women. On each step, many people leave a small monetary donation and pray for good fortune.[Provided by Shikoku Japan 88 Route Guide]

・・・Route Information・・・

You have to walk on a simple pilgrimage road with a view to the Pacific Ocean on your left. This route is divided into three sections. Basically there is only one route, but there are some ancient roads that cross this.
First section (19.7km): From Yakuouji (#23) to Sabadaishi (bekkaku #4). The first half goes up over some hills. The second half has nice views from near the shore. Shortly before Saba Daishi, an old road and the modern road run side by side.
Second section (22.3km): From Sabadaishi (bekkaku #4) to Toyodaishi (a bangai). This is a varied section of the route, through small towns, over hills, and along the coast.
Third section (33.7km): Only 1 route. From Toyodaishi to Hotsumisakiji (#24). Follow the coast. Some people find this section a little boring, though it gets very interesting as the approach Hotsumisakiji. There are no stores or even vending machines for most of this part of the route. Make sure you have enough water and snacks.
