Niomon (#24)

History

In 807 Kūkai, who had returned from China, founded this temple by carving a statue of Kokuzō Bosatsu as the main deity. Many temple artifacts are stored in the Hōmotsukan building. One of the seven mysteries of Muroto is a “Kane-ishi” on the temple grounds. It is believed that the noise when you hit this rock with a small rock will reach the spirits of those who have passed away. This temple is known informally by the local people as Higashi-dera (Eastern temple) and Kongōchōji is known as Nishi-dera (Western temple). [Provided by Shikoku Japan 88 Route Guide]
