Niomon (#45)

History

According to legend, Kūkai was told about this place by a mysterious female recluse, Hokke-sennin. Kūkai carved two Fudō Myōō statues and created this temple which is considered a “nansho” (difficult place). While you are here, you can go to Seriwari-zenjō, a place where Kōbō Daishi trained. It is reached by passing thirty-six stone Buddhist statues of immortal youths, going through a wooden gate, and then climbing up a steep rock face with ropes, chains and ladders. If you ask at the temple office, the staff will give you the key to open the gate and special osamefuda to place at each statue along the way. (¥300) It will take less than two hours to go from the temple to the summit and back. [Provided by Shikoku Japan 88 Route Guide]
