History
This temple was founded in 703 by a Buddhist priest, Nisshō. Gyōki came here in 722 and when Kūkai came in 807 he drew a picture of Amida Nyorai and enshrined it as the main deity. During the 19th century, the picture was moved to Kannonji.
Originally, Kotohiki Hachiman shrine was the 68th sacred site, but due to the separation of Buddhism and Shintoism in 1868, Jinnein, which was managing the shrine, took over. However, Jinnein could not survive because it did not have any money so the Main Hall was moved to the temple grounds of Kannonji.[Provided by Shikoku Japan 88 Route Guide]
