Niomon and Five-story pagoda (#86)

History

In 626, a Buddhist nun called Ōshi Sonoko carved a statue of Jūichimen Kannon Bosatsu from a piece of driftwood in the bay of Shido. In 693, Gyōki and the son of Fujiwara no Fuhito visited this place and constructed several buildings. During the Muromachi period (1392-1573) the temple prospered, but later fell into ruin. In 1671 the main hall and Niōmon gate were rebuilt with support from the lord of Takamatsu. [Provided by Shikoku Japan 88 Route Guide]
