History
In 807 when Kōbō Daishi arrived at the place and founded this temple a tengu (a kind of legendary figure usually shown with an extremely long, red nose) engaged in a debate with Kōbō Daishi. The tengu lost the argument, was told to never appear again, and was confined at Cape Ashizuri. There are pictures on the walls of the Daishi hall that illustrate this story. In 1872 the law prohibiting women from visiting this temple was abolished. [Provided by Shikoku Japan 88 Route Guide]
